The Lyme Disease Tick Map iPhone app ($1.99) has so much more information than its name suggests, and is well worth its low price for anyone who finds themselves in areas of high tick concentration.
For starters, yes, there is a tick map on the app. Using the iPhone location services, a map comes up that shows you your location with a color coded display labeling the number of infected ticks in and around your area. But the app delves much further into tick identification and disease prevention.
There are sections with tips for preventing Lyme disease, which are basically tips for avoiding being bitten by ticks. The app also has pictures and descriptions to assist in identifying and removing ticks. In the process of this review, I learned that adult male ticks aren’t a concern because they don’t bite. Who knew?
You can also see nearly a dozen photos of what a Lyme disease rash looks like. Be warned, they’re not exactly like mosquito bites.
All of this information is laid out in separate buttons, bullet-point style, making it simple to navigate to the information that you’re currently most interested in. The information provided is easy to understand as well, so even those without previous outdoors experience should be able to understand how to keep the ticks at bay.
There aren’t many Lyme disease- or tick-oriented apps on the market, but Lyme Disease Tick Map is so comprehensive that there’s really no need for any more besides this one. If you’re in a tick-friendly area, you’d do well to download this as soon as possible.
