I’ll be the first to admit I was tired of the pirate meme about five minutes after it started. I get a lot of stupid Internet stuff, but this just really was beyond me. Having said that, Words With Pirates is a pretty funny goof on the more well-known Words With Friends.
Words With Friends, for the unacquainted, is basically Scrabble for your phone. Words With Pirates, then, is Scrabble for your mobile phone, but you can only make pirate words. Released for a limited time in order to celebrate a “national pirate holiday” according to the app store description, you’re given an overabundance of As, Rs, Gs and Hs, leading to a board full of “AARRRRGHs” for 40 points.
Obviously, this isn’t an app to take too seriously, which makes it sort of difficult to review properly, but for a one-note joke, Words With Pirates is also nicely put together. Players are able to connect with one another via shared Words With Friends names, your iPhone contact list, pass and play and even just by looking for a “random pirate.”
The same push notifications that let you know your opponent has made a move apply to Words With Pirates, as well. Basically, Words With Pirates is Words With Friends using a dictionary of garbled pirate noises.
If you feel like having a quick laugh, this app would certainly do the trick. On the other hand, if you’re happy making more literate words on a mock-Scrabble board, you’ll probably want to skip this game.
