ISpeakSpanish, or “hablo español” if you really are speaking Spanish, works muy bueno.
When the app pops up you’re ready to go. Simply tap the upper box to bring up the keyboard and type in what you would like to have translated. You can toggle between the English-to-Spanish box and Spanish-to-English functions with the squiggly icon in the middle between them. After typing in your text, touch translate in the upper-right-hand corner and your ISpeakSpanish translation appears in the bottom box. Works like a snap.
Like many translation apps, ISpeakSpanish uses Google Translator, a machine-generated translation tool. Google translates literally word for word, so you might lose some context when translating longer phrases or sentences. Touch “Speak It” on the bottom left and you’ll hear the translation.
The ISpeakSpanish voice is actually computer-generated, but it sounds very lifelike. Touch the arrow icon at the bottom in the middle and you can save or email your translation. The envelope icon on the right at the bottom allows you to retrieve saved phrases, even when offline. The “i” icon in the upper left lets you adjust both the volume and speed of the speech of the ISpeakSpanish speaker. The developer handles seems to deal with tildes (~) in Spanish well. If you use the English keyboard to input Spanish-to-English translations, it interpolates Spanish characters where appropriate. The developer Future Apps has 10 more European languages in the ISpeak … series. , so if you’re doing the European tour, you can pick up others too. Mucho gracias Future Apps.
