Latest Apple TV rumors still fuzzy about the role of apps

Less than six weeks before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, there are nearly as many rumors about a fully operational Apple TV as there are about next generation iPhones.

The most recent Apple TV rumor comes via a source of Cult of Mac claiming to have seen an actual prototype of the new device. Cult of Mac anticipates a larger LED-backlit Cinema Display to go along Siri, FaceTime, and AirPlay Mirroring (which is already available for the existing set-top version).

What’s missing? Any indication of an app ecosystem for developers to create titles specific to the new device. The Apple TV can have everything Cult of Mac reports, as well as deals with all the major entertainment and news content providers.

What the Apple TV will need to really differentiate from other alternatives, however, are independently-developed apps that reimagine the device in ways that Apple, Hollywood studios, and New York publishers never previously fathomed. This sure worked for the iPhone and the iPad.

In fact, there are already dozens of great app available to consume on Apple TV, thanks to AirPlay Mirroring and forward-thinking developers.

Here is our list of the best apps you can already watch on Apple TV.
