Getting your calculations correct when cooking can be especially difficult when you’re halving or doubling a recipe. Kitchenator for iPhone and iPod Touch takes the guesswork out of your conversions which is especially nice for the mathematically inept, like me.
Although I’m fond of Kitchenator’s good looks, I wasn’t thrilled with the app’s general interface, which relies on three slider bars. The app does helpfully provide an instruction overlay, but I still spent a few minutes figuring out exactly how the app works. In the left column you’ll select from nine units of measurement from which you’d like to convert. In the right column you’ll select which measurement you’d like to convert to.
In the center of Kitchenator you’ll see a scroll bar of portion amounts. The range included here is massive, from as little as .01 to 1000. After aligning your chosen amount with the dots, you’ll see a final calculation at the bottom of the screen. If you need to specify the amount further, tap the center number to display additional options. Despite its flexibility, I’d prefer to simply be able to type in my own number for conversion—scrolling through the options and hitting the times-10 button the right number of time is too time-consuming for my tastes. And let’s face it, the chances of me needing to know what 1000 tablespoons equals is slim to none.
If Kitchenator was free I’d tell you to give it a look. But as it’s stands, for a buck you’re better off with Google’s answers to your conversion questions.
