First things first: MotionX-GPS is absolutely not for driving. The key word here is “motion,” and if the idea of fresh air and exercise gives you the shakes, your best bet is to leave this app alone. If you’re the hikey-bikey type, MotionX-GPS is well worth its $2.99 price tag.
MotionX-GPS is so meaty that its information screen alone has more data than most other apps. Reading through the detailed directions, tutorials and FAQs, while worth it, is pretty much compulsory. This is not an intuitive app. Once you figure out how to ring the bells and toot the whistles, though, MotionX-GPS just cooks.
Using the app is like having a cartographer in your back pocket. You can choose from five different map views, including: Open Road, Open Terrain, Google Roadmap, Google Satellite and Google Hybrid. As long as you have a clean line of sight to GPS satellites, the app accurately tracks your position in seconds.
Other app developers take note: MotionX-GPS lets users access iPod playlists, snap pictures or share information via Facebook, Twitter and email without having to quit out of the app. This is the new standard. Get with the program!
Unfortunately, these features demand power. The best you can hope for is four hours of uninterrupted use, but you’ll likely top out around three. If you have an all-day outing planned, a MotionX-GPS-enabled iPhone might not be your best bet. Otherwise, MotionX-GPS is an awesome app for people in motion.
