We’re getting deeper into November, and that means it’s time to start thinking about where you’re going to get your turkey. While most of you will simply go hunting for one at the local grocery store, some of the more outdoorsy types may actually go hunting for one.
You may wonder where the iPhone comes into all this. Well, even though we’re still a ways away from apps that can turn the phone into a hunting rifle, we do already have an app that can lure the turkey to you.
Turkey Calls is a 99-cent app that includes 21 different turkey calls, from cackles and gobbles to purrs and yelps. Many of the calls have multiple options — for example, there are two different cluck samples — and for the most part they are of excellent quality.
The app also includes a help section that tells you a little about each of the calls, though aside from that, it is pretty much the same as any other hunting calls app.
The audio clips are pretty loud, though I doubt they would be of any use while you were hunting. Primos Hunting Calls boasts a feature that allows you to output the calls through your headphone jack, which allows you to set up a makeshift speaker system if you like. Turkey Calls does not advertise anything like that, so it is basically limited to being a practice guide.
That’s not all that bad of a thing, though. Twenty-one audio files is a pretty impressive amount, and they are of better quality than the very similar Free Turkey Calls app that is available. Just know that those are really the only differences between the two.
Turkey Calls is a perfect example of an average app. It caters to a niche audience, who will undoubtedly be impressed by it. But it’s pretty dry and somewhat limited, so very few outside of that niche need to bother.
