You don’t see many iPhone apps offering “clean” and “explicit” versions. Then again, the iSamJackson iPhone app ($2.99) isn’t just any iPhone app.
As the title suggests, the iPhone app brings plenty of actor Samuel L. Jackson to your iPhone. It’s essentially a large collection of his sound clips (more than 150), with a few bells and whistles thrown in.
The main page consists of buttons that play specific clips. You can edit pages and titles, similar to the way you can move and delete iPhone apps from the iPhone. Though this is a pretty simple feature, it’s also a very cool one.
The other sections are a thumb scan and a Magic 8-ball type “ask a question” feature. Both are cute the first couple of times you try it, until you realize they are basically just random play buttons.
iSamJackson also has a “download” section, which lets you get fresh content in case you get tired of your current sound clips. It’s a little disappointing that you have to pay for most of them, but at least the developer is attempting to make this an iPhone app you won’t be finished with in a week.
I should also mention that the explicit version is extremely explicit. Many of the clips with naughty words are marked with an “M,” but in general, this version of the iPhone app is one you’ll want to keep away from delicate ears.
My only real problem with iSamJackson is the price – $2.99. For an iPhone app that doesn’t have any practical purpose aside from making noise and messing with friends, that strikes me as a little high, and I have a feeling many other iPhone users will agree.
With that being said, even if you know what is going to happen, the iPhone app will still make you laugh the first time you use it. It is over-the-top ridiculous and can be lots of fun in the right circumstances.
But unless you’re a huge Samuel Jackson fan, I’d recommend waiting for the inevitable price drop. It’s not that this iPhone app lacks charm; it’s just that for its current price, it needs more functionality.
