New Gestures
One of the biggest and most notable changes that have been made to the iPhone X is that there is no home button and that the screen spans nearly the entire front with very little bezel space. For this reason, there are new gestures that need to be picked up which has replaced the traditional home button that many iPhone users have become accustomed to. To get to the home screen as if clicking the home button once, all that a user has to do is swipe up, a control that is extremely intuitive. To see all of the apps that are currently open, users need to swipe from the bottom and pause before browsing the open apps. Alternatively, users can simply swipe across the bottom of the screen to access the different apps that are currently open. To get to the control center, simply swipe down from the right side of the screen which will then open the suite of tools such as brightness and music. With 3D touch, users can hold down on a control to prompt it to open. For example, if a user holds down on the brightness button in the control panel, a switch will appear from which they can control the brightness. To see all of the notifications in a single place, all that has to be done is swiping down from any screen at which point they will be made available. Swiping to the right in this screen will reveal the widgets and swiping left will show the camera. For those who want to talk to Siri, they can do so by saying “Hi Siri” or holding the button on the right side of the screen to activate it.
Face ID
FaceID is a feature that has effectively removed the need for TouchID in previous models of the iPhone. As the name implies, a user’s face is considered to be the password instead of a typed password or the fingerprint. To set this up, all that needs to be done is to move your head slowly in a circle to complete the recording. After this, FaceID will recognize the user in different environments whether they are indoors, outdoors, or in total darkness. Even if a user changes their look, the feature can still recognize the user with different makeup, facial hair, and even sunglasses. Instead of having to hold up the phone right up to their face, users simple need to glance at it for FaceID to recognize and automatically unlock the phone. This feature is further translated to other apps that would have required a fingerprint in previous iPhone models such as Apple Pay and downloading apps. For privacy reasons, all of the face details are stored right on the phone instead of being backed up in iCloud or an external source so that it stays private.
Animoji
One of the most hyped aspects of the iPhone X is the introduction of Animojis which lets users become emojis instead of simply using them. Replicating the filters on Snapchat, Animojis lets users mask their face with one of twelve characters from chickens to monkeys. Bringing this feature to a whole new level, the camera maps over 50 different muscles in the face that are then replicated through the characters to provide highly fluid and accurate facial features across the different animations in real time to capture emotions. To access this, users need to select the Animoji app through the keyboard and then record their message to send to others. Beyond simply sending the Animojis, users can also create stickers with them by holding the Animoji and then dragging it onto the conversation.
Portrait Lighting
With significant improvements made to the camera technology on the iPhone X, users can add studio lighting effects with portrait mode to improve their image. When in portrait mode, all that has to be done is to choose between 5 different lighting effects which instantly enhances the image exactly how a user wants it to be done. Even for images that have already been taken, they can be post-edited with portrait lighting that can create an entirely new look in seconds, something that was not possible with previous versions of iPhone. However, this mode is still in beta and hence may still have some glitches as the full version is rolled out.
As the iPhone X is said to be one of the biggest innovations that Apple has done to the iPhone since the iPhone 4, this marks a significant milestone for the company. With all of the features that are added to the device in terms of hardware and software, the changes that are listed in this article reflect the largest upgrades that have been made. However, more updates are likely to be released in the near future as well as the reveal of other minor features that have been overlooked thus far.
