Cavorite may look and move like a fast-paced platform jumping game but it is actually a much more subdued title with a clear focus on puzzle mechanics. Whether that appeals to you or not will go a long way towards determining whether you enjoy playing it.
Setting aside the first handful of levels which function mostly as an in-game instruction manual, Cavorite is challenging almost immediately. It features puzzles that the player can make impossible to finish (by moving boxes in place where they can’t be pushed, and so forth) and therefore requires a bit of patience and an acute awareness of the restart button.
Adding a wrinkle to otherwise elementary puzzle-first gameplay, the player can manipulate gravity with the objects in the game. If you need a box to reach the ceiling, you can tap a button that will cause it to slowly rise, and if you double-tap quickly enough you can hitch a ride on the box, too. It’s a cool trick that makes the puzzles in the game that much more challenging.
As with most iPhone games, players can complete levels without too much fuss, but if they’re looking for a true challenge they’ll find one if they attempt to pick up the bonus items that are scattered throughout each level. I’ve always thought that simultaneous difficulty levels cater well to players of all ages, and in a game like Cavorite, even more experienced players may enjoy getting thrown a bone by skipping out on the bonus items every now and again.
Nothing visually jumps out too strongly in Cavorite, but if you’re looking for a challenging, gameplay-first puzzle experience you will certainly find one here. This is one of the more challenging puzzle games I’ve played and worth checking out for fans of the genre.
