You may not have the new iPhone 4 in your pocket yet, but Apple’s iOS 4 release has delivered a welcome update to existing iPhone users. From multitasking to better geo-location features, we’re just as anxious as you are to see all the new things our iPhone apps will be able to do.
Here are some iPhone apps that have already updated their apps to work with iOS 4.
Location savvy and multi-tasking
Foursquare has smartly updated its free iPhone app to support the new iOS 4. The app can run in the background and supports app-switching, making it easier to use while actually out and about. But you’ll just have to try it for yourself to see all the ways Foursquare is taking advantage of its new capabilities.
Use all that background GPS tracking for your own good, with MotionX-GPS. The $2.99 iPhone app tracks your movement, whether you’re hiking or driving across country. Record distance, time and speed, and listen to your voice coach in the background. Tracks can be saved and shared.
Evernote will now sync your saved notes in the background, even while other apps are running. Thanks to the added iOS 4 support, the free iPhone app can now do more to keep track of your notes. Take advantage of the iPhone’s multi-tasking features, and get more done.
FlightTrack Pro makes travel a little less stressful, with iOS 4 updates its iPhone app. At $9.99, you would expect nothing less. You can now sync your tracked flights with your iPhone calendar, and send text message updates to loved ones directly from the app.
Blogging and networking
WordPress made several updates to its free iPhone app, but the changes most directly related to the new iOS 4 pertain to the user interface and optimization for the Retina Display. You also won’t lose your drafts if interrupted by another app either opening or closing.
Facebook hasn’t updated its social networking app for the new iOS 4 yet, but LinkedIn has. Along with updates to its BlackBerry app, LinkedIn is staying up on its mobile campaigns. There’s not much more to the update besides minor changes to support iOS 4, but we’re sure glad to have a social network looking forward with its iPhone app releases.
Tweetaholic’s iOS 4 support lets you upload photos and refresh timelines in the background, making for faster social media-sharing and update posting. The $3.99 Twitter app has managed to beat Twitter to the iOS 4 updates, with a focus primarily on a continued app experience, even if you switch between multiple apps.
Background music and entertainment
Peggle, an iPhone standard developed by PopCap Games based on a PC game, recently updated its app to accommodate iOS 4. The update adds to the game’s background music and improves upon the in-game speed and frame rates, an area in which the game had been noticeably lagging. Peggle costs $2.99 and has unlimited replayability, making it one of the very best casual games ported to the iPhone.
One of the best things about the iOS 4 is the ability to run music apps in the background. Pandora’s free iPhone app was smart to get in early on the update, giving users continuous listening enjoyment while they run other apps.
Guitar Hero is one favorite many are happy to see support the new iOS 4. At $2.99 it’s one of the few games that was quick to update, though more updates are in the pipeline. So feel free to rock out with the recently updated music game that puts you in center stage.
Plants vs. Zombies’ (another PopCap gem) recent update was primarily to support the new iOS 4, with smaller fixes as well. That’s still good for users, as the $2.99 iPhone game now supports multitasking. Check your email in the middle of a raid, and get right back to the game, exactly where you left off.
