After the undead begin walking and terrorizing the world, you take it upon yourself as a 25 foot-tall pizza with incredible rigidity and balance to crush them all into bone dust. This takes many forms, however. You’ll start out simply rolling left and right, battling skeletons with spears, but soon find yourself rescuing puppies, rolling down ski slopes, bouncing on brains, and sumo wrestling giant skulls in epic boss battles. The boss battles seem to be getting mixed reactions, but I thought they were challenging and a great addition to the game. They even poke fun at Angry Birds with some castle crushing sprees, and there’s a great take on Feeding Frenzy where your slice of pizza eats smaller fish skeletons, growing in size.
This platformer is controlled through tilt, yes, but these tilt controls are far better than most. They’re easily calibrated and I never had trouble with them. You also tap the screen to jump, and again in mid-air to pound the ground like pizza dough. Completing levels and doing well in the spinning Wheel of Pizza prize mini-game will add lots of coinage to your collection. You use these coins to completely customize your Pizza friend. You can purchase new toppings, eyes, hats, mouths and even entirely different bases. If you have more of a sweet tooth, you might want to play as a doughnut, or maybe you’re a baseball fan, in which case, this game’s got you covered. You’d be amazed at how much fun customizing your Pizza can be, and there are even difficult to unlock secret ingredients that must be won in the Pizza Wheel game.
This game might not be for everyone, but I still think everyone should try it out. It can be quite repetitive across all 100 levels, but you don’t need to beat and three star every level to make progress, so skipping that one game type that you’re bored to tears of is a viable option. There’s a free version to try out as well, if you’re unsure about the tilt or anything else. Game Center achievements and leaderboards are supported, along with Facebook and Twitter connectivity, in this iOS universal game. You can check it out for the introductory price of three dollars. Definitely get it before the sale ends if you want it. The developers have big plans to add more levels and more customization options, and the game will only get better from here. I won’t lie. This game is definitely just a wee bit over-hyped at the moment, but there is definitely some awesome sauce under the gooey, cheesy exterior.
