iPhone App Video Review: Gears

The game controls two ways: you can swipe or tilt to move around. Swiping is very intuitive and feels good. By the game’s own admission, tilting is a lot harder than swiping, but you’ll get a bonus for playing in that style. The graphics are fantastic, and even adjustable depending on what device you’re playing on. The game is just aesthetically pleasing all around, from the levels to the 2D cutscenes.

The game can be extremely difficult. It’s quite easy to roll the ball all over the place in a frenzy, bouncing it off the walls. This game is all about control and precision. You don’t need to collect every bit of energy on a level to proceed, but as a completionist, I always feel the need to. The challenge comes from the time limit in each level, though you can always set it to easy mode for no time limit if you just want to finish the game. If you’re one of the more hardcore gamers among us, you can always try Brutal, which has a tighter time limit as well as a single life to complete each level…you have fun with that one.

All in all, there’s not much more to be said about Gears. It’s full of interesting aspects, from the back story to the art style, and it can be very addicting. For only a buck, you’re getting a ton of value. Definitely check it out.
