There are three game modes here. The first two are Quickshot and World Tour, making a return appearance from the first game. The third is a new mode called 5-ball challenge. In Quickshot the goal is to get as many points as you can within the time limit, with the location of the hole constantly changing. Scoring a bulls-eye or a hole-in-ones adds time to the clock, but the longer you play, the more wind interference you have to deal with. In world tour, you have nine shots to reach a certain score in order to unlock the next map.
The final map requires you get gold medals on all the previous maps, which is not as hard as it sounds, but still quite challenging. Finally, the new mode, 5-ball challenge, asks you to get as many points as possible using only five balls. Scoring a hole in one gives you an extra ball. Each mode has a different feel and is equally addicting to play. You control the game by (what else?) flicking the golf ball towards the goal. You can even control the ball in mid air by swiping the screen in the direction you’d like it to go, and for a few bounces after it lands as well. This frantic mechanic gives you hope when your shots are way off, and it’s great fun.
The ‘extreme’ in the title is referring to the locations you play in. No longer are you moving from boring green golf course to boring green golf course, opting instead to golf on aircraft carriers, rooftops, and oil rigs. The new locations show that it isn’t really a golf game, but just an arcade high score game posing as a golf game, and a really good one at that. The controls feel a little bit tighter than its predecessor. I can’t really articulate why exactly, but it was easier to progress and move forward than it was in the last game. The developers, Full Fat Productions, are the same ones that brought us Coin Drop, another recent favorite of mine. These guys definitely know addicting game play. They throw in Game Center leaderboards and achievements as well as lots of other stat tracking. The app costs three dollars, and I say you definitely get what you pay for with this one. Check it out.
