iPhone App Video Review: DreamWorks Dragons: TapDragonDrop

It has a few flaws, but the art is gorgeous and the puzzles are solid, even if the publishers are a bit greedier than other iOS publishers.

The entire point of the game is to use the adorable dragon, Toothless, to herd sheep into cages. You do this by scaring them with your roar, clearing their path with fire and head-butts, and by picking up and dropping boulders, logs, bales of hay, and more. You are rated on each level out of three stars, as is common. One star is for basic completion, one is for getting all sheep to the cage safely, and another is for completing the level within a certain move limit. The levels were paced out fairly well and some of them were fairly challenging, but for the most part they were quite simple. Later levels do get pretty tricky, though.

My main complaint with the app is just how slowly everything plays out. It might sound like a silly complaint, but the sheep take forever to get around and your dragon even takes his sweet time with several actions. If you mess up the timing at the end of a series of events or lose one single sheep, it’s tempting to just ignore that star and continue because restarting can seem like a hassle.

Especially since many levels involve a long set-up phase, so to speak.  Some kind of fast forward button would have been appreciated. Also, while there are sixty levels currently available, another level pack is already available for a one dollar in-app purchase. It’s totally valid of them to offer it for a price, of course. I just find it a shame since there aren’t many levels to begin with.

The art is extremely well done, in my opinion. I love the use of colors and shading, and the assets really pop off of the screen. The background music was also epic and great. As an added bonus, there are several hidden treasures scattered throughout the levels. Game Center achievements are supported. This is a very solid puzzle title, and while I think it could have been a bit more engaging. I’d say it’s probably worth a download from puzzle fanatics. DreamWorks Dragons: TapDragonDrop is iOS Universal and available for two dollars at the time of this review.
