iPhone App Video Review: Chicken Rescue

In this game, you play as Mama Chicken trying to round up all of her escaped chicks. Each level consists of roaming about the area, collecting flowers and hunting those chicks down before safely escorting them back to the hen house. The only way to get three stars for a level is to collect every single flower and chick. The random trees and bushes usually hold things like apples, which add on to your score. There are plenty of hazards to avoid, such as damaging bumble bees and cacti, and bouncy pigs that send you flying off ledges. After each level, you’ll be rewarded coins to spend on unlockable costumes and RPG-like upgrades for Mama, such as the very useful health upgrades.

The game is initially controlled through tilt, though you can switch to a virtual stick if that’s what you prefer. Neither feel particularly smooth, and the stick seems a bit stiff. When you run out of lives, you can either start the level over, or spawn at your most recent checkpoint using coins. The game is clearly meant to be very family friendly and intended for young ages, as it always holds your hand and never lets you figure anything out yourself, but the controls add a level of difficulty that even seasoned gamers like myself will find frustrating. If you want, you can purchase coins in-app for a big stat boost. It’s not necessary to do, but It’s insanely tempting.

The simple and stylized 3D graphics are very appealing, and the music is what you’d expect from such a family friendly mobile game. Game Center achievements and leaderboards are supported if you want some more goals to work towards. The game is iOS universal, supports iCloud, and can be yours for two dollars, though it’s currently on sale for one dollar. This doesn’t seem like it’s worth more than one dollar at all, so if you’re even remotely interested, pick it up now. The game isn’t really bad, but most people will probably find that it just isn’t much fun.
