iPhone app The Guardian is for the more than average bloke

Do you find American media a bit sterile? Download The Guardian iPhone app ($3.99) and enjoy a serious dose of British journalism, complete with headlines of footballers’ (soccer players for the Yanks) drunken escapades and graphic photos of wounded soldiers.

The iPhone app is a no-fuss source of everything British, and everything that was once British (think former colonies). At the top of the iPhone app are two tabs, one reads ‘latest’ and the other, ‘trending.’ The ‘latest’ tab is self-explanatory. The ‘trending’ tab lists a dozen of the hottest news items of the moment (such as the Silvio Berlusconi assault).

There are a couple of features that set this iPhone app apart from others. One, it has an extensive list of photo galleries and audio clips. Many news-related iPhone apps, even those from huge corporations, lack this multimedia bonus.

In addition, The Guardian app allows the user to format the various categories however he or she sees fit. If you are a Premier League fanatic, for example, you can put the football category at the top of the list save you the trouble of having to scroll down.

The best part of the iPhone app? Quirky editorial pieces that American newspapers would never have the guts to print, including one that was headlined “The people who ruined the decade.”
