It’s official.
Steve Jobs announced today the unveiling of Apple’s (AAPL) iPad 2. Shipping for the next edition of the iconic tablet computer begins in nine days on March 11.
While pricing and battery life for the iPad remain the same, there are a lot of things that are “dramatically” different.”
For starters, white versions of the iPad 2 will be available on day one. Other enhancements are more than skin deep.
The iPad 2 will come equipped with the following:
- Dual-core processors
- Front and rear camera (which will accommodate a version of FaceTime)
- HDMI video output
- Up to 2X faster CPU
- Up to 9X faster graphics
- An A5 chip
- Gyroscope
- A separately available smart cover will be available in polyurethane ($39) and leather ($69) (watch Apple’s demo video here)
The 1.3 lb device (down from 1.5 lb.) is also one-third thinner than the original iPad and actually thinner than the iPhone 4.
“It feels totally different,” said Jobs, whose appearance wasn’t confirmed until the time of the announcement. After going on medical leave earlier this year, Jobs appeared physically strong and proud of his company’s new device. Click here for Apple’s demonstration video.
It’s still all about the apps
The iPad 2 will operate on a new iOS 4.3. As is the case with all of Apple’s iDevices, it is all about the apps.
Jobs introduced two new apps designed to shine on the new device. iMovie for iPad comes with a precision editor, multitrack audio recording, new themes, Airplay support, and HD video sharing.
“This is not a toy,” said Jobs. “You can actually edit movies from this thing.”
iMovie for iPad will cost $4.99.
The second app unveiled was Garage Band for iPad. In addition to offering a virtual guitar amp and effects, the Garage Band for iPad app will let you jam with other touch instruments including a Grand Piano, organ, drums and bass.
Garage Band for iPad will cost $4.99, too.
Stay tuned throughout the hours and days ahead for more coverage of the iPad 2 and the apps that will make it shine.
