When using the free Internship Seeker iPhone app, I was reminded of the saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” It seems that developers Internships LLC have opted for a similar but peculiar mantra, “You can lead a student to internships, but definitely don’t help them apply.”
Internship Seeker lets you search by keyword and location for a wide variety of internships. The results that the app returns appear to be impressive as well. Entering “Engineer” for instance, returns over 20 results in Chicago, complete with a little info box for each position, informing users whether the internship is paid, offers college credit, and whether it’s part-time or full-time. It’s a clever way for users to quickly self-filter whether they want to go on and read the description of the internship.
But that paragraph just about sums up the only good things Internship Seeker does. You can’t specifically filter internships by paid/unpaid, or full-time/part-time. You can’t tell when an internship was posted, and whether it’d even be worth looking into at this point.
Worst and most confusing of all, the iPhone app doesn’t tell you where to apply to the internship. Sure, applying to an internship over your iPhone sounds like a bad decision, but shouldn’t users at least be given an email address to which they can send their application?
The lack of a customizable search and any contact information make this an app to pass on, despite its user-friendly layout and unique info-box style presentation.
