Insider insight to all things Fashion Week with W Front Row

New York Fashion Week kickc off this Thursday, so Condé Nast and editors from W magazine compiled what they believe to be the “ultimate Fashion Week” app for iPhone and iPod Touch, W Front Row.

I can see W Front Row being a useful tool during the upcoming international fashion weeks, however, the app advertises that it covers all four of the majors. It doesn’t. The current version of W Front Row only includes New York, London and Milan, so anyone looking for information related to Paris is out of luck.

For the events W Front Row does contain, the app provides a complete show schedule along with maps of each show’s location. This information is presented in chronological order, but it would be nice to have the option to search by designer name or sort by location for easier planning. I expect the calendar feature will see the most use in W Front Row, but there’s also a live Twitter feed for tweets tagged #NYFW, among others, for users to keep track of updates related to the events.

The W Insider Guide offers city-specific information, including a shopping guide with store details, maps, phone numbers, hot spots for eating and drinking and tips for beauty and culture stops. The Insiders section compiles best bets from those in the know, so if you want to see Jonathan Adler or Amy Sacco’s favorites, you can.

W Front Row is rife with pop-up ads, appearing at almost every tab switch. The ads themselves didn’t bother me as much as the fact that they didn’t rotate, which meant I saw the same Akris ad eight times in a row.

W Front Row is an average app, at best. There’s not much in-depth information to be found, but its calendar might prove useful. Regardless, I’d hope that during Fashion Week your eyes are on the runways instead of your iPhone.
