Clear your schedule: Infinity Blade II just hit the iTunes App Store, and you’re going to need a few hours at least to see everything it has to offer, and likely a few more hours to deal with the game’s addictive and deep sword-fighting mechanics. Infinity Blade II (iPhone, iPad) $6.99
A year from the release of its first effort on iOS, ChAIR Entertainment steps its efforts up in a big way with Infinity Blade II. The sequel preserves all the coolness of the original including amazing Unreal Engine 3 graphics, tight touch-based swordplay and a weird, beautiful world. But everything in the sequel is bigger and better. You can dual-wield weapons or opt for a hefty two-handed number to deal massive damage to your enemies, and the game has been tweaked substantially to make everything about it deeper and more expansive. Infinity Blade was one of the premier titles in the iTunes App Store, and its sequel easily surpasses it.
Space Tripper (iPhone, iPad) $3.99
Formerly just a PC release, Space Tripper (also known as Astro Tripper) has found a home in the App Store and plays great on Apple’s iOS devices. It’s something of a top-down shooter that mixes touch controls – controlling in which of two directions you’re facing and changing weapons – with tilt controls that direct you around the screen. And those mechanics work really well, even if the game seems to always be unreasonably, painfully difficult. An arcade shooter with an addictive nature and great graphics, Space Tripper is quite the challenge.
Crimson: Steam Pirates (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
Developed by a spin-off company of Bungie, the studio behind the popular Halo series on Xbox, Crimson: Steam Pirates has a lot of steam punk personality. You play a freshly-minted pirate in command of his own ship and are tasked with raiding ports and destroying enemy vessels standing in your way. All the action is turn-based, meaning you’ll give your ship(s) orders and then put them into action at the same time as your opponents, requiring you to make your own plans and anticipate your enemies’. Crimson: Steam Pirates packs lots of levels, a fun and humorous tone and plenty of strategy action.
Angry Birds Seasons ($0.99)
Yep, it’s that time of the year again when the folks at Rovio hit us with another update to their classic Angry Birds Seasons franchise. Wreck the Halls is the latest update to the bird-flinging physics game and offers 25 new, challenging festive-themed levels featuring gingerbread cookies, candy canes, twinkling lights, jingling bells and all that fun Christmas stuff. With 500 million downloads already, plus 10 million Facebook fans, Rovio continues to entertain and produce top quality fun for Angry Birds fans everywhere. With a new level unveiled Advent style every day until Christmas, expect a surprise or two along the way.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies (iPhone, iPad) $6.99
Bringing the zombies experience from the most popular video game franchise on the planet, Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies actually does a pretty good job of distilling the first-person shooter’s console experience to mobile devices. It maintains the harrowing nature of the zombie experience, as well as the high production values and goofy characters. It also provides a multiplayer experience. You can play the game alone or with as many as three other cooperative teammates – just like Black Ops Zombies’ big boy cousin – and the title also packs 50 levels of the twin-stick zombie shooter Dead Ops Arcade.
