iMut8r easily the most ghoulish iPhone photo app around

With Halloween just around the corner, people are about to spend hours making themselves into all sorts of creepy vampires, witches, werewolves and demons — but why spend all that time when there’s an iPhone app for that?

Welcome to the iMut8r app, where you can take your well-dressed and socially acceptable company photo and turn it into a snapshot of undead grossness. Sure, there are plenty of apps that let you add silly graphics to your photos, but iMut8r (99 cents) stands out from the pack in my mind.

It all starts with the level of specialization that iMut8r brings to the table. Rather than just throwing your photo into an editor and giving you a bunch of decaying body parts to put into your photo, iMut8r gives you special effects depending on what sort of photo you want to create. There are different options for zombies, vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, ghouls, and something called a “Freakenthing.”

The vampire, for instances, focuses on fang-type photo editing, while the “Freakenthing” has a greater emphasis on bulbous heads filled with stitches. If you’re worried you can’t create some sort of hybrid witch-vampire, don’t worry at all. The app lets you switch characters before you fully save your photo. Additionally, you can always re-load your saved photo into the editor of a different character if you decide to change it later.

About the only frustrating aspect to iMut8r is that once you get deep into your editing, it can be overly difficult to subtract layers. Although the app provides instructions for removing the last layer you added and removing all layers, there is no way to remove, say, the second-to-last layer you added without starting over from scratch. A layer list would certainly make using this app more user friendly.

Aside from editing qualms, there isn’t much bad to say at all about iMut8r. If you’re looking to give your photos some Halloween flair, the robust set of editing options will surely do the trick. You can turn even the most mild-mannered of gentlemen into an abhorrent freak in no time. That’s the sort of trick-or-treat everyone can enjoy.
