IK Multimedia’s GrooveMaker Hip-Hop iPhone app cuts out the middleman in making tasty grooves

Deep down, everyone wants to be a DJ. Manning the ones and twos for a sweaty crowd while melding obscure samples from disparate sources into a unified tune is undeniably cool.

But in this fast-paced, go-go world, who has the time to track down tons of record stores and pilfer through dusty boxes of vinyl to find forgotten gold?

IK Multimedia’s GrooveMaker Hip-Hop simplifies that whole process by, for a tiny investment, letting you feel like a DJ by just giving you a ton of loops, eight possible tracks to map them to, and the ability to swap any of them as you see fit on the fly. You can even pan the tracks left and right, tweak the tempo, and construct your own songs from layered loops you build. If you’re musically inclined but not concerned with nitpicking over every tiny detail, you can also hit a button to randomly fill in the app’s blank sheet.

While the app is extremely user friendly, even allowing you to export your work as .WAVs, one handy option that’s sadly missing is the option to undo any of the countless changes you can make. Without that, you’ll need to second guess your muse if you’re this close to perfecting your jam — hardly ideal for an app that gives you plenty of tools and even more freedom.
