Whether you’re in the market for a new home, or just want to keep up on area trends such as pricing, HomeSnap for iPhone and iPod Touch wants to aid your search with augmented reality.
I wasn’t thrilled that an account is required to use HomeSnap in the first place, but I opted to sign-up for a dedicated log-in, rather than connecting my Facebook account. Once you’re registered for the service, you’ll be able to take a photo of a home and see its current or estimated pricing information. The app works best with homes currently on the market, with up-to-date MLS information, but even this information should be taken with a grain of salt. I had trouble matching a Chicago property to its listed price elsewhere.
In addition to financials, you can also see school information, historical data and the really important things, such as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. You can save your snaps as favorites and there’s also a social stream, which allows you to see snaps taken by other users. My favorite feature is “stealth,” available from the camera panel, which let’s you look at nearby properties without taking a photo curbside.
Considering HomeSnap’s user-friendly interface, it’s not a bad option for those seeking home stats. As long as you aren’t taking the provided information as home sales gospel, that is.
