If you fancy yourself a bit of a traveler, you’ve probably noticed there isn’t really a great way to catalogue your travels in real time. Numerous apps do a bit of good here and there, but there isn’t really a Swiss army knife of travel catalogue apps. HipGeo might not be perfect, but it gets a lot closer to the end goal than any other app previously.
HipGeo works as a combination social network and trip journal. On the social side, users can see nearby, popular and featured photo journals in an easy to view stream. If you find there’s a user whose stream you enjoy, you can elect to follow them a la Twitter. The users you follow are placed onto a separate page and you won’t have trouble keeping up with their photographic adventures.
Users can also manually post their own streams by submitting their location, a text blurb, or a photo. Choosing any of the options is easy enough, and you can choose whether you want to take a brand new photo or choose one from your existing camera roll.
If you don’t really care to take the time to document your adventure yourself, you can set the app to auto-record whenever you travel somewhere new. Thereafter, HipGeo will create new posts with your location updated as you go. Thankfully, HipGeo makes these posts private by default, but users can go back in later and make them public while adding any other multimedia they see fit.
The only frustrating aspect of HipGeo at this point is that more people aren’t using it. The nearby activity feed in Chicago hasn’t changed in a couple of days, and the featured and popular feeds aren’t exactly exploding with movement. Once the app gets more traction it should make for an incredible timeline, especially during times of breaking news.
If you’re looking for a new way to keep track of your adventures, HipGeo is well worth checking out. Activity may be slim now, but once it picks up this app will be hard to put down.
