Once you download most apps, they proceed to do their thing without added fees; be it looking up arcane definitions or guiding your race car to the finish line at Indy. Not so DateCheck, the long-awaited free app from Intellius, which makes good on its promise to help background check that prospective sweetie — but not without due diligence and extra cash on your part.
DateCheck uses three different means to lead you to records on an individual — phone number, name, or email address. In this way, DateCheck could make a useful investigative tool for many folks, not just those trawling the meat market. But using myself as a dating guinea pig (please, spare me the self-love jokes), I found holes and problems in this potentially killer app.
For starters, the cell phone records DateCheck found traced back to the phone’s original owner, and resulted in erroneous information. That is, DateCheck combined my street address and his name. What’s more, it said that this great friend of mine had a criminal record with 13 arrests. That would constitute, to quote any gumshoe, a case of mistaken identity.
As for how much information such as income, arrest records and the like will cost you, basic stats might run you $1, while more detailed reports can cost $15. Is it worth it? That depends on how much you need to know about that special someone, and how much patience you have to dig. DateCheck does make the digging process easier, but like love itself, doesn’t promise a smooth road on the way to bliss.
