When you were a kid, did you have one of those labyrinth games, a wood box with a maze on top and two knobs on the sides to swivel corners of it up and down, directing a metal marble to avoid holes and make it to the end? The Labyrinth 2 iPhone app ($4.99) is based on this traditional game, and takes full advantage of its digital medium.
The colorful game includes features in the mazes that are only possible with an electronic labyrinth. There are different kinds of cannons, red laser beams, pinball style bumpers, merry-go-rounds and flashing red strobe lights. Labyrinth 2 includes features that change the size of your ball, duplicate your ball, buttons that open walls, fans that blow it around and magnets that steer it off course.
All of this adds up to a fun game. Other labyrinth games are available, but Labyrinth 2 is the most innovative so far. The variety of maze features makes this iPhone app stand out.
The developer, Illusion Labs, also included a way for users to create their own custom levels on the Web, transfer the mazes to their devices and share them with others. In addition, you can connect with other players via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you’re in proximity.
The only drawback to Labyrinth 2 that I found was its $5 price tag. It’s one of those things where you could do better, or you could do worse. You could do better because there are droves of great games available for less money. You could do worse because there are plenty of iPhone apps available which are not good and still cost plenty. If you enjoyed the wooden labyrinth when you were a kid, you’ll probably enjoy Labyrinth 2 as well.
