I don’t know that you’d ever find me lurking around a graphic novel shop. It’s not so much that I don’t enjoy a graphic novel here and there or dislike the crowd, but simply that my taste doesn’t cause me to seek them out. However, despite the fact that I would never go looking for an app like this, I do enjoy it’s function. Halftone by Juicy Bits ($0.99) is a great, lightweight little app that will add some nice creativity to your pics.
It’s basically an effect preset for your pictures packaged into an app. You select a picture or take one and then you choose a few options to change the look and feel. You can edit the text, and then you’re done. The options allow you to choose the layout of the title and captions on the clipping, the paper texture that the image is on and the font. There are not many options to choose from in any of these categories, which narrows the uses of this app. All in all, though, it does what it’s designed to do, and the finished product is not too shabby.
I like the feel of the app while using it. That’s the strongest aspect of this app. The folks over at Juicy Bits definitely did it right. I just wish that they had a bit more variety within the options, so you could exercise more creativity. The creativity of the app is preset — whatever they thought would look good is already selected. All you can do is slightly change the feel of the pic.
If you’re looking for a creative preset to add to your plethora of image-editing apps, Halftone isn’t a bad way to go. If you’re looking for some editing capabilities that go beyond the basic consumer level, you’ll feel limited by this app. At $0.99, I think it’s priced correctly. It’s a solid app, but nothing spectacular.
