Wheaton’s own Kevin Streelman may not be the most well-known professional golfer, but given that he has been a top-100 ranked professional golfer and a member of the PGA Tour, he’s probably a good enough name to put behind an instructional golf app.
Besides, there’s no way Tiger Woods strips down to his boxers to show you how to hit a ball that’s on the edge of a water hazard.
Golf Like A PGA Tour Pro is essentially an instructional video. Streelman says that most poor golf shots are the result of bad set-ups, not poor swings. So that — along with a goofy water hazard video — is what you’re getting with this S Squared Golf release.
The app has a smart design, as the main menu is a golf hole with different sections such as tee, fairway and putting. If you select tee, you are given options such as how to deal with first hole jitters and how to hit a draw or cut shot.
In addition to the videos, you can simply read about the shots — it’s not a word-for-word transcription of the videos, but it’s close. Still, it’s a nice thing to have in case you’ve already watched the video and you don’t want to sit through it again.
You can also mark videos as favorites if you there’s one you’re going to be revisiting often. Given the large number of videos and sub-sections included in the app, this feature is a welcome addition.
Golf Like A PGA Tour Pro strikes me as an app that will be more useful for an advanced amateur than for a newcomer. It assumes that you have some skills and tries to help you shave strokes off your round by fixing the little things.
It’s not as useful as getting actual lessons from someone, but then again I don’t know of many golf lessons that will only set you back $4.99. While that price may be a little high for an app, golf apps are often more expensive and there is enough included to make most people happy.
