The Notes iPhone app is still on my home screen, just the way it was when I first started up my iPhone. It’s not out of habit, but out of use. I am constantly jotting things down on various Notes pages. Whether it’s grocery lists, small to-do’s, or just phone numbers I’ll need to reference quickly later, Notes is a very solid app. In theory, I could also easily put a few “goals” down as well, but the Goalbook iPhone app ($1.99) has other ideas.
The very existence of Goalbook suggests it one-ups the basic Notes app entirely. And it does add some extra value; namely, it combines the function of the Notes app with a bit more of a multimedia focus. You can write down a goal and then go back in and add photos to that goal. Maybe this is to get you motivated to get that hot summer body, or perhaps you could take photos of that hot summer body to prove you completed that goal. Either way, Goalbook gives you the option.
You can also get ideas for goals by looking at the “global” goals list. If someone writes a goal and “shares” it, it’s added to this global list. You don’t see any information about the person, just the sentence or two they’ve written down as their goal.
If nothing else, this lets you know others are in the same boat as you. You can also give a thumbs up or thumbs down to people’s goals. That actually seems kind of cruel and odd; to judge another person’s goal completely without knowing the context, but maybe I’m reading too deeply into a glorified notepad app.
And really, that is what this is. If you feel the need to use a separate iPhone app to write down your goals, this one will work. It’s unfortunate that you’re unable to put expiration dates on your goals, but otherwise Goalbook is basically the Notes app with some photos.
