Glade iPhone app aims (and fails) to create relaxing soundscapes

To promote its new fragrance collection Relaxing Moments, SC Johnson’s Glade has launched the Glade Relaxing Moments Composer iPhone and iPod Touch app.

The free app, which only works in landscape mode, offers up three images that correspond with Glade’s new scents: “Cool Serenity,” “Island Escape” and “Water Blossoms.” Accompanying each scene is complementary music, including a pre-recorded clip that users can listen to.

To create your own music, you tab objects in each scene to toggle their melodies on and off. Tapping across the screen will play individual notes, and the sounds are designed to match the theme of the image. As you compose moments, you’ll unlock new objects and sounds. Recording is done with the tap of the button, but by my count, users could only record 20 seconds of sound. There’s no way to save these beyond sharing them over Facebook (please don’t).

Glade Relaxing Moments Composer isn’t exactly a speedy app. Every time you switch screens, the Glade splash page appears, which slows the app down. Further, the sounds included in the Glade app are not relaxing in the least. Although the nature clips sound right, I found the tones of the musical notes to be grating and overly synthesized.
