The USA Today iPhone app is modeled after the newspaper’s print edition, delivering condensed information in a quick and efficient manner. Most news headlines are accompanied by a thumbnail photograph. The full article text is moderately sized, but you can’t increase it for easier reading. This format is effective and much appreciated when you only have a few minutes to scan the headlines. If you like the USA Today, you will enjoy this app.
Across the top of the app screen are the categories “Top News,” “News,” “Money” and “Sports.” You can’t get much clearer than that. Under the “Sports” category, the app filters information by league – both professional and amateur – and then provides scores for all of the latest games.
One noteworthy subcategory is “snapshots”. Here, you can read and contribute to surveys with questions varying from “What are the sexiest U.S. cities?” to “Do you feel vulnerable to identity theft?”
What stands out the most within the app are the photographs. The photo section includes multiple subcategories including “Day in Photos,” “Day in Sports” and “Week in Travel.” The photos come complete with snappy captions, and you can make your way through them just as you would on a Web site.
If you ever find yourself stuck at the airport, the celebrity slide shows should happily kill at least a few hours.
