Some things get better with age. The South by Southwest Music and Media Conference kicks off Saturday for the 25th consecutive year and the program looks better than ever.
But with hundreds of presentations, programs, and performances spanning nine days, attendance requires a strategy. You don’t want to find yourself in the wrong venue at the wrong time.
So whether you are traveling to the festival for business or pleasure, make sure you kick off SXSW by downloading Lonely Planet’s new Austin iPhone app. It includes all the critical accoutrements you need for a successful week.
One of my favorite features in the app is the Top Picks which can be found within the “Hello Austin” category. It includes some the coolest places to chill while visiting the Texas city.
And more recommendations can be found in the “Things to Do” category, which includes shopping, eating, bars and clubs, and accommodations, among others. There are several very promising coffee bars, a must-have considering you probably won’t be getting much sleep.
If you want to delve into Austin’s quirky arts culture – and if you are there for SXSW I am sure you do – the “Culture and People” feature will help fill you in on some of the city’s creative history and even more creative characters.
Lastly, the app brags a terrific map that breaks down the city street by street. And it is complemented by a neighborhoods feature that highlights downtown, south Austin, the University of Texas campus, east Austin and greater Austin.
