Some would argue that the MLB playoffs don’t inspire quite the excitement of the NFL playoffs or even the NHL playoffs, which are discussed in mythic terms among even casual fans of the sport. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t apps worth your time to help you follow the best October tradition this side of Halloween.
MLB.com At Bat ’11 ($4.99)
If you thought MLB.com At Bat ’11 was a little too pricy during the regular season, the playoff version of the app should be much more alluring. For only five bucks, you can follow every game using the MLB.com Gameday software. You can also see highlights seconds after they happen. If you have an MLB.TV subscription you can also watch all of the games live right in the app, too. If you’re into playoff baseball, this is the real must-have app.
ESPN iScore Baseball Scorekeeper ($9.99)
Are you the type of person who spends their days at the ballpark filling out the scorecard so you can have an accurate record of the game and because you are a bit of a geek? Well the ESPN iScore Baseball Scorekeeper will test that geekery. The app gives you the ability to keep track of every play in the game. You can even keep track of pitches if you are so inclined. Once you’re done, you can transfer the scorecard out of the app to share it with all of your friends to make sure they’ll never think of you the same way again.

FOX Sports Mobile (Free)
This year, the American League Championship Series and the World Series are both being broadcast on FOX, which means that the FOX Sports Mobile app is just what the doctor ordered. You’ll see all the news and scores you can use, and you can also follow each game with a gameday play-by-play breakdown. The app also has exclusive analysis from FOX Sports personalities – something that should come in handy as a companion to the TV coverage.
My Sports Picks (Free)
Gambling on baseball isn’t nearly as fun or interesting as making a little wager on a Sunday full of football games, but it does liven up match-ups that you otherwise might not care about. With My Sports Picks you can make picks using real odds and then track your bet history to see if you have a future in the MLB wagering world. You probably don’t, but this app will let you pretend for a bit and won’t bankrupt you.
MLB Compare! 2011 Live Scores ($1.99)
Everyone wants to be an armchair analyst, and with MLB Compare! you can be. You can look at the day’s games and see detailed statistical analysis with information like a team’s record against another and their record in their last five meetings. You might not have the clout of a room full of seasoned MLB veterans but when you’re talking to your roommate about how you think the Rays will go all the way, at least you can speak with some authority.
