Family Guy fans who appreciate vintage video games will probably like Family Guy: Uncensored, the second app based on the animated TV show. Unfortunately, the game does not live up to its $4.99 price tag, and leaves something to be desired in audio and depth.
Ten mini-games with titles such as “Peter Vs. Chicken” and “Meg Jump” take players through utilitarian plot lines across the town of Quahog. Many of the mini-games are nods to classic games. For example, “Jungle Love,” with Quagmire swinging through a jungle brimming with scantily-clad women, is reminiscent of 1982’s Jungle Hunt.
Some of the games have outlandish elements with the same irreverent tone as the show. In “Brian Vs. Stewie,” Brian is running away from Stewie, and every time he stumbles, Stewie inflicts over-the-top harm such as toasting him with a flamethrower. In “Sketch Arcade,” Chris soars through the sky with bat wings, and shoots down dozens of Meg-pigs — flying pig bodies with Meg heads — creatures that look like jokes from The Island of Dr. Moreau.
The audio for Family Guy: Uncensored is missing key components. The character voices are noticeably absent, as is the show’s theme song.
These mini-games are easy and serious gamers will have no problem beating the overall game quickly, despite its lack of logical checkpoints within the mini-games. For $4.99, the game should offer more entertainment. Even hard-core Family Guy fans will feel like they are being gauged with this effort.
