Heading up today’s new games is an iPhone port of a board game classic, revamped with a new look and a story mode. I’m not sure exactly how they created a story for Stratego, but you can check it out and other new games in today’s fresh list.
Stratego (iPhone) $2.99
This is really just a port of the classic board game to the iPhone – which is exactly what I was hoping for.
Actually, though, Stratego has been amped up with a few options as far as gameplay mode and game types go. The app offers a classic battle, which sounds like it’s a pretty faithful recreation of the board game experience, as well as a campaign mode and a duel mode. Campaign looks to include some kind of story and stretch over multiple battles, although I have no idea what duel mode is all about.
Stratego also features an alternative art style to the look of the board game, and the developer promises to add multiplayer support in the future.
Moony (iPhone) $0.99
Moony is a vertically scrolling platformer that incorporates an interesting and cutesy art style into some classic gameplay, and it’s the graphical style that might draw you in. It mixes a storybook look with crayon drawings, similar in tone to what you might see in one of the Doodle games, but with a more refined feel. There seems to be a lot of variety to the levels, at least graphically, so Moony should give you plenty to look at while you jump from platform to platform.
As far as gameplay is concerned, expect to be challenged to put lots of focus on accurately timing your jumps to keep advancing upward.
CupicMaze (iPhone) $1.99
Three-dimensional puzzle games can be hit or miss, but CupicMaze at least has the premise to be challenging and addictive. Basically, you need to navigate through a cube from one side to another. It sounds simple enough, but iPhone touch controls work really well for exploring a 3D shape, so CupicMaze could be a lot of fun when it comes to manipulating the maze to see all available options.
The game also includes a free-draw mode, which allows you to create your own 3D shapes in the game using swipes and other touch controls. Free-draw doesn’t sound incredibly deep, but it should provide a fun, if momentary, distraction.
