Monster Dash creators Half Brick Studios have another undead-themed shooter to share with us in today’s Fresh Games. We also found a cool new puzzler and a game that gets you off the couch.
GPS Fun (iPhone) $0.99
This almost doesn’t qualify as an iPhone game, but it’s also pretty clever and worth mentioning. GPS Fun isn’t quite an augmented reality game, but it does require that you actually get out and do things – in fact, it’s sort of like a virtual scavenger hunt, using your iPhone’s GPS to send you to different locations in your immediate area.
Using Google Maps, GPS Fun sends you to a spot, where you “collect” a “fruit.” There’s no real fruit there – that’s the virtual part of the game – so when you arrive, you shake your iPhone to pick up the virtual item and log it as collected.
The game basically just has you running from location to location as fast as you can. Think Die Hard: With a Vengeance. A timer counts down and you have a limited amount of time to “collect” five virtual avocados, six virtual apples or 15 virtual oranges. GPS Fun sounds like it’ll get you into shape, but the game could be very fun to play with more than one person, race-style.
Hexetera (iPhone) $0.99
Hexetera conjures comparisons with games like Tetris, Bejeweled and Hexic. It tries to combine the best features of all three games to make innovation out of standard puzzle game clichés. At the least, it should get us thinking in different directions.
In the game, different colored pieces of hexagon fall from the top of the screen. You need to direct these falling pieces to make groups of the same color, and you can rotate the hexagons once they’ve formed on the screen, reworking where the pieces are and how they connect. Making long, diagonal groups of colors eliminates the pieces and scores points. It’s more complicated than that, though. In general, Hexetera sounds like a challenging and welcome new take on puzzlers.
Age of Zombies (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
The icon for this app is a cartoon zombie Tyrannosaurus Rex – that’s already a win for this top-down two-stick shooter!
Using a pair of virtual buttons, Age of Zombies has you blowing away goofy looking undead monsters in various locales with 16-bit-style graphics. The whole experience looks to be geared toward the retro camp, which sounds awesome.
If it looks a lot like Monster Dash, that’s because both games are made by Half Brick Studios. The same sort of tone is achieved in that quality game, so it’s not much of a stretch to think Age of Zombies could be just as popular and good.
