Fresh iPhone Games for Nov. 23: Gunstar Heroes, Time Geeks, Beyond Ynth update

In today’s Fresh Games list, we’ve got a port of a class 2D shooter from the days of the SEGA Genesis. Read on below to relive a bit of the 1990s, as well as checking out a few other suggestions we found interesting.

Gunstar Heroes (iPhone) $2.99

Gunstar is a port of SEGA’s old side-scrolling shooter for its Genesis console. Check this one out if you like retro-style games with 16-bit graphics and classic game sensibilities — think Contra, but with a more Sonic the Hedgehog art style.

The best part of the game is the ability to connect to a second player for cooperative play. You’ll need Bluetooth connectivity for the multiplayer mode, but you’ll have no problem if your iPhone is newer than second generation. There’s about 25 boss fights to go through and lots of enemies to blast with several different weapons — check it out.

Time Geeks: Find All! HD (iPad) $1.99

Here’s another retro-style game with a whole bunch of content, including several different play modes and mini-games, but the basic gist is a game akin to Where’s Waldo? in which you try to find objects that don’t belong after they’ve been displaced in time.

If you’ve seen Time Geeks on iPhone, you’ll recognize that this is a bigger, more fleshed-out version of that game with the same cool art style and play modes. Time Geeks is packed full of minigames to keep you busy; and you’ve got Game Center compatibility to compare your progress to other players.

Beyond Ynth update (iPhone, iPad) $3.99

In one of the tougher platformers on the iPhone and iPad, you control a little bug that has a lot of ground to cover. Along the way are the standard video game hazards like lava, as well as lots of puzzles to solve that requires strategic thinking and a light touch.

This heavily challenging platformer has given players a lot of grief since its release, but a big update adds a new feature to take much of the pressure off: now when you’re about to die or find yourself unable to solve a puzzle, you can hit the “rewind” button to reverse time to a point before your mishap. The update also brings in Game Center connectivity to make playing a little more competitive.
