Three free offerings make up our Fresh Games list today. Take a look below for something for everybody: a vertical scroller that takes players into outer space; a classic side-scrolling platformer the style of which many of us will remember from childhood video games; and a physics puzzler that starts simple and quickly becomes hectic.
Astronut (iPhone) Free
The thing that sets Astronut from other casual jump games is the level of action involved. You’ll constantly be running into aliens and enemies as you bounce from planet to planet, trying to scale as much vertical space as possible.
Developer Iconfactory packed 24 levels into the game, which is free for the time being, and it includes 40 achievements. Expect to spend quite a while bouncing through this game.
Blade of Betrayal (iAd Edition) (iPhone) Free
This free, iAd-supported edition of the retro-style platformer is in the style of old classics like Ninja Gaiden on the Nintendo Entertainment System. You can also get Blade of Betrayal as a $1.99 version with some additional features, content downloads, and an iAd-free presentation.
You’ll find a simple, classic gameplay experience here, in which players take control of a character in a side-scrolling battle. The levels are all kind of huge, with lots of ground to cover and explore and a whole lot of hidden items to discover.
Tiltz (iPhone) Free
This physics puzzler has a simple premise. Marbles fall from a pipe at the top of the screen and drop onto slanted platforms. Your job is to tilt the platforms to get the marbles to roll down to a pipe at the bottom.
The pace picks up pretty quickly as more and more marbles drop, so you’ll find yourself quickly jumping back and forth between platforms to manage lots of marbles at once. The best puzzlers tend to be the ones that don’t require much effort to learn, but are easy to get lost in — expect Tiltz to be like that.
