Another day, another set of games — we’re starting out today’s Fresh Games list with Hyperlight, a tilt-based 2.5-D shooter in which you don’t get any guns and have to use your skills and wits to survive. Up next is TinkerBox, a puzzle game in which you’ll arrange different elements to create Rube Goldberg-like machines to reach goals. Finally, we have Chop Chop Rocket, which also uses tilt controls, but this time to help guide a rocket ship past asteroids to rack up a high score. Read about all three below.
Hyperlight (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
In the same vein as Tilt To Live, Hyperlight is a top-down 2D shooter in which you steer your spaceship around the screen, fighting off swarms of enemies that come gunning for you. But Hyperlight is a shooter in which you don’t get any guns — instead, you’ll have to gather power-ups and tilt your device more extremely in order to get a burst of speed and kill your enemies.
Hyperlight features an “Infinite” mode, in which you attempt to earn as many points as possible until you’re killed, and an arcade mode that lets you rise up through 40 levels. You’ll also take on eight different bosses throughout the course of the game. Hyperlight includes Game Center support that suppies achievements and leaderboards to the game as well.
TinkerBox (iPhone, iPad) Free
Solving TinkerBox’s series of puzzles is a lot like putting together a Rube Goldberg machine. Each puzzle requires you to use components you get at the outset to move objects or trigger switches to complete a goal. Puzzles get more complex over time, using axles, wheels, motors, platforms, switches — all kinds of objects and components that will have you building some fairly complex machines by the end.
TinkerBox also includes an “invent” mode, in which you’re free to use the components from the puzzles to create any contraption you want. Best of all, TinkerBox is free to play.
Chop Chop Rocket (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Tilt controls are king in Chop Chop Rocket, in which you need to guide your cartoon rocket up the screen through asteroids and other obstacles, while gathering power-ups and coins along the way. Every impact with a rock or an object damages your vehicle, so you’ll need speed and precision to keep from blowing up.
In addition to its cartoony, colorful art direction, Chop Chop Rocket includes 18 achievements that can be unlocked through the game. It supports OpenFeint and Game Center, meaning you get two leaderboards to see how you stack up against friends and opponents all over the world.
