The award-winning Infinity Blade has just received an enormous content update that nearly doubles the size of the game and its features. It adds all kinds of stuff and is generally pretty great — which is why it’s at the top of our Fresh Games list today. Also making it are a couple of old-school favorites resurrected for iOS: Speedball 2 Evolution, a violent (albeit old-looking) arcade sports game, and DoubleDragon, the beat-em-up “of legend” that spawned a really terrible direct-to-video movie.
Infinity Blade update (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
In terms of graphics and simple but challenging gameplay, Infinity Blade has no rival; it’s a game that requires you to get better in order to trounce the minions of the Godking and finally face him in mortal, one-on-one combat. That was great, but all in all, the game, originally, was a little short.
The Deathless King, a huge update for Infinity Blade, fixes that by adding almost twice as much gameplay, a whole new game mode, new enemies and new achievements. Infinity Blade also got a whole bunch of new loot and a new play mode: “New Game +,” a feature that allows players to start over but keep their equipment so they can continue playing and rising in strength. Clocking in at almost 550MB and coming along with a half-price sale until the end of the week, you’ll want to be getting Infinity Blade if you haven’t already.
Speedball 2 Evolution (iPhone) $3.99
Grab a storied, old-school arcade action sports title Speedball 2 and relive the days of the NES and Commodore 64, in which small, pixely athletes wailed on each other. Speedball 2 has been revamped for the iPhone, featuring tilt controls for moving your team up and down the field and aiming, and a quick, all-purpose tap for passing or shooting, as tackling other players — which you’re highly encouraged to do.
Speedball packs all the goodness of the original series and brings it to a new audience. You can switch off the tilt controls if they’re not your bag, as well as take on a friend using Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi. Speedball also packs 22 achievements, a season-play mode and Game Center support.
DoubleDragon (iPhone) $3.99
The beat-’em-up classic that was one of the mainstays of my Nintendo Entertainment System is back on the iOS, and it’s just as awesome (and difficult) as ever. DoubleDragon has received quite a bit of graphical polish since the 8-bit days and looks and sounds great, but at its core, it’s the same game you remember, with the same 2D side-scrolling levels filled with bad guys and huge boss fights with folks named “Abobo.”
What would DoubleDragon be without a two-player mode? You’ve got one here, using a Bluetooth connection, allowing you and a friend to take on the Black Warriors in tandem. There’s also a simplified control scheme for newer players, and achievements mixed in to keep you pushing your skills higher and higher.
