Fans of console classics Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the NIght should check out Robot Wants Kitty, an exploration-based platformer with equipment-finding sensibilities. Snag it, and while you’re at it, check out Forget-Me-Not, a Pac-Man-style arcade game, and the Plants vs. Zombies-like PetsWar.
Robot Wants Kitty (iPhone) $0.99
There’s a factory filed with monsters, boiling acid, ledges and other hazards — and a cat. That’s where you come in. You control a robot in search of that kitty in this iOS port of the Flash game of the same name. Work through the factory to gather up new abilities like jumping and firing lasers, with each allowing you to explore new areas and ultimately find your way to your wayward kitty.
Robot Wants Kitty features a variety of different levels, keeping the experience short so you can play it on the go. Levels are broken up by type: there’s one for novice players, another for experts, and another that features lots of boss fights but not a lot of exploration.
Forget-Me-Not (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Cross Pac-Man with Centipede and you get Forget-Me-Not, an old-school arcade game in which you steer a little guy around a maze, collecting pellets and fighting off monsters. As you move, you also constantly shoot lasers out in front of you that you can use to dispatch enemies — but they always come back, so you’ll have to hurry to clear each level before you find yourself overrun.
Located in each top-down level is a key to exit the level that you’ll have to drag along with you at the risk of losing it to enemies. Forget-Me-Not packs three different game modes, including a survival mode and a randomized level mode, to change up the experience and keep Forget-Me-Not fresh.
PetsWar (iPhone, iPad) $1.99
Movie monsters are on the prowl, hoping to overtake and destroy the world. Your only hope is to align forces to stop them: forces of weapon-wielding pets to defend you against the onslaught of enemies. If you’ve played Plants vs. Zombies, you’ll have an idea of what PetsWar is like. You’ll set up forces in defensive postures and harvest corn to summon new animals that each have different abilities.
There are 28 different animals you can summon to help fight through more than 30 levels. PetsWar has a great hand-drawn art style and an emphasis on story that plays out through lots of hand-drawn cutscenes.
