Fans of Super Mario Galaxy, check out Get Outta My Galaxy!, today’s leading Fresh iPhone Game. It uses the device’s tilt and touchscreen capabilities to let you wander around small 3D planets, like in Mario’s space-bound exploits, and slap around invading aliens. Racing around round, tiny planets, smacking cute and annoying aliens — if that sounds like kind of a perfectly weird iOS game, go ahead and download Get Outta My Galaxy! As a four-armed, ornery denizen of a tiny but peaceful planet, you have to defend your homestead from blue, radish-looking invaders.
In each level, you’ll tilt the device to work your way around a small planet, while tapping around the screen lets you fire off a brutal slap to the face of nearby aliens. You’ll need to be quick, though, as blue aliens spawn green aliens and green aliens grow annoying grass that can slow you down.
Pilot Winds (iPhone, iPad) Free (with in-app purchase of $0.99)
By now you might have played the very popular and extremely fun Tiny Wings, a game that unseated Angry Birds as the top-grossing game in the iTunes App Store when it was released a few weeks ago. Pilot Winds, a game whose development began before Tiny Wings, works on much the same premise and is a lot of fun itself — just like that game, you help a flightless bird (a penguin this time) achieve flight by touching the screen when he goes down hills and releasing when he reaches their peak, picking up momentum to fling him through the air.
Pilot Winds is just as visually pretty, fun and challenging as Tiny Wings, but it offers a more complex and deep experience. Instead of just going down slopes and coming back up, you can carefully time your falls to “bounce,” or drop all your momentum for a 500-point “Splat” and start fresh. There are lots of different actions that add to your score, and Pilot Winds features multiple game modes. It’s free to try and you can upgrade to the full version for just a dollar.
Overkill (iPhone, iPad) Free
The “overkill” part the title of Overkill refers to is the number of weapons you can buy, upgrade and choose from to use in this pop-up shooting gallery game. You’re faced with a screen on which stationary enemies pop into view, and your task is to quickly drag your gun’s sights over them and shoot them, before a timer next to each diminishes and they start shooting back. Facing down each wave of enemies nets you money and “medals” that you can take back to the gun store to retrieve better weapons.
Overkill is quick and easy to get into and a very rewarding game, handing you weapons to try out temporarily from time to time in addition to the stuff you can buy back in the shop. There’s a lot of upgrading to do to make you a better combatant, but before long, stronger, faster enemies start to show up in your gallery as well. Shooter fans will find some simple, but deep, gameplay, with a lot of focus just on the shooter mechanics that makes for a good small-scale mobile experience.
