EA Mobile has just released NBA Jam, and if you enjoyed the console versions of the classic 2-on-2 arcade basketball title, you’ll have a great time with this iOS port. It’s leads our Fresh Games list today, and you can get all the details on it, and a couple of other interesting games, below.
NBA Jam from EA Sports (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
Remember the great arcade basketball from the 1990s? EA Mobile’s iPhone port is pretty much dead-on the exact same great experience, heavily updated, polished-up and made beautiful for your iOS device. You’ll take part in some intense two-on-two basketball action that’s filled with dunks, shoves, turbo boosting and flaming nets.
Consisting of a quick-play mode that lets you hop straight into a game, and a classic campaign mode that you can work through over time, you’ll find plenty of great arcade b-ball action in NBA Jam. The game is full of unlockables that you’ll grab for completing games and beating opponents, and includes some great graphical additions like photo-realistic 2D heads of actual basketball players on your characters. NBA Jam is the classic arcade experience and is just as great as it was on consoles years ago.
Super Soviet Missile Mastar (iPhone, iPad) Free
Simplicity of form and goofiness of concept mark Super Soviet Missile Mastar [sic], a former Flash game that was available with the title Alien Hominid on PlayStation 2 and Xbox Live. It contains only two colors, red and white, along with some highly pixelated graphics. It’s also free, which makes this jokey but addictive game worth a look.
Using touch controls, your job is to guide a Soviet ICBM to the U.S. But it won’t be easy — there’s all kinds of stuff in your way, like helicopters rising from below, fighter jets attempting to intercept you, and birds that just crowd your airspace. Run into any of them and your missile is toast, but make it to your destination and you’ll rack up some points. It doesn’t take much to master, but Super Soviet’s ease of play will keep you interested.
Zombie Isle (iPhone, iPad) Free
In the vein of games like Mafia Wars and FarmVille, Zombie Isle is a “freemium” title — it’s free to download and play, but it limits what you can do and how often you can use it. As a stranded pirate, you’ll raise a zombie crew, buy a ship, wage war and dig for treasure. All those actions require energy, however, and it takes time to recharge. You can purchase virtual items to recharge your energy through in-app purchases (the “premium” part of freemium), or just wait the eight or so hours for your energy to recharge and play again.
If you enjoy being a little limited, Zombie Isle isn’t a bad offering and has a variety of different activities within it. You and your zombie will dig around small islands to find treasure, which you can then spend on items and ships. You can sack harbors with your zombie minions to make more zombies, and use them to take on other pirates and their ships. All of it helps you grow your crew and become a dread pirate zombie lord.
