Eden – World Builder (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Lots of gamers have discovered a back-to-basics PC game called Minecraft. It has a few specific, familiar features — a first-person viewpoint, monsters and survival necessities for the player — but more than anything, it’s a game that lets you build the world around you with all kinds of different blocks. Players have built houses, castles, fortresses, and even huge, scale models of intergalactic spaceships from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Eden brings the worldbuilding concept to your iPhone, although it lacks the monsters and other features of Minecraft. But, the app does allow you to build intense 3D worlds from the ground up, for a low price. If the game is as addictive as Minecraft seems to be, Eden is more than worth a buck.
Backbreaker 2: Vengeance (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
This sequel to the popular football app adds several modes to Backbreaker, which has players carrying the ball downfield while trying to dodge tackles, using a set of virtual controls. The game includes a lot of action and some crushing hits.
Fresh to the sequel is a new game mode that has players working as the defense, so you can attempt to bring down the ball carrier you formerly were controlling, plus a lot of improvements to make the experience more challenging. Plus Backbreaker 2 includes Game Center support, so you can compare your abilities to other players all over the world.
Lame Castle (iPhone) $0.99
What started as a jab at iOS games by the Sony PlayStation Portable’s marketing department has turned into a full-fledged game in Lame Castle. It’s a running-type platformer, not unlike Robot Unicorn Attack or Monster Dash, in which your character is constantly moving forward and it takes carefully timed button taps to avoid death.
There are 24 levels, plus four infinite-play challenge stages, all available for a buck in a limited introductory sale. Lame Castle includes Facebook and Game Center support for bragging rights, and about 30 achievements to knock down. Get to it.
