House of Glass (iPad) Free ($4.99 in-app upgrade)
Part point-and-click game focusing on exploration, and part puzzle-solver, House of Glass has you exploring a mysterious house and manipulating 3D gems in various puzzles in order to move through it. The puzzles all present you with shapes that can be fit together in different ways — tangram puzzles that you might remember from school — and the puzzles can be solved in multiple ways.
House of Glass includes 30 puzzles, not to mention the stuff going on in the house that’s not gem-related, and presents a pretty deep and enthralling story. The game can be pretty challenging, but the puzzles at least include a hint system, and the whole package includes Game Center support. Downloading and starting up the game is free, but accessing the full version will run you $4.99 in an in-app purchase.
TXT Fighter (iPhone) $0.99
I’m sure you’ve figured this out, but just in case: it’s a fighting game, but rather than using controls, your task is to text words as quickly and accurately as possible in order to score hits against your opponents. You don’t do any of the actual fighting on your own, but speedy texts will carry you to victory.
Featuring several fighters to choose from, as well as wail on, players fight through an elimination tournament with hopes of besting Master Wu, the guy at the top of the ladder who also happens to have wronged all the competitors along the way. There’s also a versus mode, so you can take your lightning texting skills to the mat against other real human opponents, plus Game Center support for achievements and leaderboards.
Devil Hunter X (iPhone) $1.99
Hop into this side-scrolling action role-playing game in its full old-school glory. You’re the Devil Hunter, tasked with taking out four demonic monsters in order to save all of humanity. Pounding through multiple levels with a variety of gameplay (including riding a dragon!), you’ll use melee combat and magic to cut a swathe to the big bosses you’re tasked with hunting down and defeating.
That’s the action half: the RPG half of the game has you gathering points to spend in the Hunter’s Association to raise your rank in the organization. Along with increasing your rank, you can also increase your skills to make sure you’re able to hack through various enemies on your way to saving humanity and all that.
