Today’s leading Fresh iPhone game is free, and there’s good reason for that — you can only play it once. That’s right, in One Single Life, all you get is a single life. The game ratchets up the pressure as you try to jump from one rooftop to another by only giving you one real shot to do it, leading to a tense experience. One Single Life (iPhone, iPad) Free
The premise of One Single Life is one I find highly intriguing. The game makes a comment about video games and instills some very intense reactions in its players by giving you only one life — and one chance — to make it through its nine levels. If you die in the course of the game, you’re locked out (at least, for the time being, as there are hints at more content coming in the future).
You have only two jobs in One Single Life: Tap, then tap again. The first tap starts your character running toward the edge of a high building; the second makes him leap to a distant roof top. It’s a simple game about timing and you get to practice each of the nine levels as much as you want before trying it for real, but if you mess up, that’s all she wrote. One Single Life demands grace and performance under pressure, which is definitely an interesting change for a video game.
Bug Village (iPhone, iPad) Free
Like lots of other similar simulation-type games like We City, Bug Village is a free-to-play game from Glu in which players build a mini-society of bugs. You’re tasked with raising funds to buy and decorate bug houses and make sure all the bugs have plenty of food by attracting different kinds of bugs and having them farm and gather resources to expand further.
You’ll do a lot of gardening in Bug Village, working to attract various kinds of insects like lady bugs, bees and ants, each with different abilities to let you harvest different resources and build different additions to your game. You’ll also need to make sure to ward off troublesome bugs like stinky bugs and ant lions.
Color Collider (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Developer Capcom’s new puzzle game is all about colored balls and where they end up. At the top of the screen in each new puzzle is a vat filled with silver beads. Your job is to place objects on the screen in order to direct the beads to different landing buckets. Think of Plinko on The Price Is Right and you’ve got the concept. The only caveat is, you have to change the colors of the beads to match the bucket where they belong.
That’s okay, though, because changing colors is (for the most part) pretty easy. You just have to use the right kind of object — red, yellow or blue, or a combination thereof — to direct the beads. Put a red and yellow triangle under the bead vat and the beads that touch the red side turn red, yellow turn yellow, and both get directed into the corresponding bucket. The challenge comes in when you have to start combining objects to get colors like orange and purple.
