This week has seen a huge drop of titles from big and popular developers like Capcom, Sega, Glu and Chillingo, and though something like 10 interesting titles were released at midnight Wednesday (among all the stuff we haven’t discovered yet), we’ve grabbed three of the biggest for our Fresh Games list today. At long last, World of Goo graces the iPhone — and it’s glorious. It’s followed closely by the multiplayer zombie-infested shooting spree, Resident Evil Mercenaries VS. Wrapping things up is a brand new version of the hilarious trivia game, You Don’t Know Jack. By the end of this article, you should probably own these.
World of Goo (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Finally, the wait is over — World of Goo, an award-winning indie title that has graced PCs, Nintendo Wiis and even the iPad is finally available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The cartoony puzzle game has a simple premise, in which you build structures using goo balls that automatically create supports near other goo balls, instantly forming scaffolding-like towers and bridges. Each level requires you to build a structure to reach a pipe to suck up excess goo balls to clear it.
You’ll need a newer device to play World of Goo, but if you’ve already purchased World of Goo HD, it’s now universal and will function on an iPhone or iPod. The $0.99 price for the iPhone-only version is only good for 24 hours, so act fast — it’s completely, totally, extremely worth it.
Resident Evil Mercenaries VS. (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
Capcom’s Resident Evil series goes multiplayer with Resident Evil Mercenaries VS., a third-person shooting game based on the Mercenaries game mode included in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Players fight one another with a few different Resident Evil characters in four-player free-for-all matches or two-on-two team battles — all while fighting off the game’s evil possessed villagers.
You can take on other players over the Internet via Wi-Fi in Mercenaries VS., or play locally using a Bluetooth connection. There are also a pair of single-player modes: a training mode that puts computer controlled characters up against you instead of human players, and a “coin shooting” mode that puts your Resident Evil shooting skills to the test. The only bummer is that the game only includes three RE characters and three maps at release.
You Don’t Know Jack (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
Revitalizing the crazy fun of the old PC pop-culture/humor/stuff you should have learned in high school trivia game, developer Jellyvision just released a new, updated version of You Don’t Know Jack for the iPhone and iPad. It’s creepily up to date — featuring questions about events so current I’m pretty sure they just happened last week — and features a variety of trivia situations, quizzing players on everything from TV shows to high art and some random stuff in between.
You Don’t Know Jack comes with 20 “episodes” full of questions. The game is presented like a TV game show and each episode packs about 15 questions and multiple modes, so you’ll be busy for at least a little while. It’s also absolutely hilarious, but painfully lacks multiplayer support of any kind at the moment. That seems like an oversight soon corrected by some kind of update or in-app purchase, and You Don’t Know Jack is still great fun without it — but please, Jellyvision. Don’t leave us hanging.
