Fresh iPhone Apps: Google Voice, Dexter, Detroit free Press

Tap into these brand new iPhone apps right away.

Messenger for Google Voice (iPhone)

$2.99

You have to be a little lucky to snag an invite-only Google Voice account, but having one is pretty sweet. It’s a free phone service that provides you with a phone number and voice mail service, but forwards calls that come in on the number to any phone (or phones) you specify.

Messenger focuses on SMS text messages, providing you with the ability to send texts from your iPhone through your Google Voice number. The app also uses Push notifications so you know when you receive a text from your Google number, just like when you receive a text normally. And Messenger links up your iPhone address book for use with your Google number.

Dexter (iPhone)

Free

I have to admit, I’m a bit of a Dexter nut. The Showtime show follows professional blood spatter analyst and amateur serial killer Dexter as he tries to cope with regular life, while he hunts and dismembers other serial killers. It’s a great show.

If you’re really into Dexter, snag Showtime’s new iPhone app. It includes schedules for the show, an episode guide, a reminder function to keep you from forgetting to watch, and a social trivia game you can challenge others to using Facebook and Twitter.

Detroit Free Press (iPhone, Android, Blackberry)

Free

The Free Press is the Pulitzer-winning newspaper out of Detroit, and I’m a little partial to this app and the great job it does presenting the news from my home town. The iPhone app has been out for a couple weeks, but the Freep has rolled out apps for Android and Blackberry as well.

Look here first if you’re at all interested in news about Detroit, Michigan, the struggles the state is facing and the industries it has cultivated for the last century. The Free Press spends a lot of time covering the auto industry as well as the city’s hard news.
