Fresh iPhone Apps for Sep. 8: Castle Clout, To-Fu 2, Grand Prix Story, King of Dragon Pass

Leading today’s influx of games is Castle Clout, a physics puzzle game about military machines of war that predates the success of similar titles like Angry Birds. This is the game that started it all. It’s followed up by a couple of new offerings in old franchises: To-Fu 2 is a puzzle-platformer sequel to To-Fu: The Trials of Chi, and Grand Prix Story follows up other titles from its developer, like Game Dev Story. Finally, King of Dragon Pass gives players a clan to shape through generations in an attempt to become its land’s king.

Castle Clout (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Before there was Angry Birds (according to developer Selectsoft), there was Castle Clout. The original “fling things at structures and knock them down” game, Castle Clout has finally made its way to iOS, where you can use your trebuchet to knock down enemy castles and crush the knights, nobles and fair maidens found within.

What makes Castle Clout most notable in the world of Angry Birds is the sheer amount of content you get for a measly dollar. The game comes with 150 levels to blast your way through, and over time you’ll earn new upgrades for your trebuchet. When you’re finished knocking down enemy structures, and can use Caslte Clout’s level editor to create levels of your own to share with other players over the Internet.

To-Fu 2 (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

To-Fu 2 is the sequel to To-Fu: The Trials of Chi, a fun platforming puzzle game in which you help a piece of tofu fling himself around levels to pick up glowing blue orbs. The second title is more of what showed up in the first, and that’s not a bad thing. To-Fu 2 has 100 new levels and more traps and other troubles to deal with along the way.

The game has lots of new puzzles and the more emblems to earn throughout. To-Fu 2 also packs Game Center support, which provides achievements and leaderboards on which players can track their scores against others all over the world.

Grand Prix Story (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

Another business simulation game from Kairosoft Co., the developer of such hits as Game Dev Story and Mega Mall Story, Grand Prix Story lets players become the boss of a racing team. You’ll need to train drivers and earn sponsors in order to advance your team toward the ultimate goal of winning the Grand Prix.

Grand Prix Story has players developing new vehicles, buy new parts, customize your cars and train a racing team that can become winners. You won’t need to be familiar with car racing or motorsports at all in order to play Grand Prix Story, but beware that like Kairosoft’s other sim games, it’s highly addictive.

King of Dragon Pass (iPhone, iPad) $9.99

Something of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” storytelling game, King of Dragon Pass is pretty text-heavy, so be warned. But if you like a game that packs a lot of story that you can shape and mold, you’ll want to give this one a look. As you move through various scenes, you’ll make choices that affect your clan’s progress through generations of life, with the ultimate goal of rising in prominence to become king of all of Dragon Pass.

King of Dragon Pass is relatively huge, with 500 scenes to work through, each requiring you to make different choices based on the story at hand. You can excel through military strength as well as diplomacy and your choices and morality will affect the story you create around you. Thought it may not be the most action-oriented game, King of Dragon Pass is extremely deep and has a lot to offer over multiple play-throughs.
